Kobe Bryant was Inefficient?

Kobe Bryant is and was one of the Pantheon Greats in the Game of basketball. A Top 3 player ever in my opinion. But one of the “knocks” on his career is that Kobe just wasn’t an efficient Scorer. People throw out meaningless career FG% and things of that nature to try to discredit Kobe and to make him seem ineffective. But how true is that actually?

Kobe Bryant for his career shot 44.7% from the field on 19.5 shots per game. He shot 33% from three on 4.1 attempts per game and he shot 83.7% from the line on 7.4 attempts throughout his career. At face value, his FG% seems very mediocre and underwhelming. The same can be said about his three point percentage. And because of this, haters of Kobe use those to slight and discredit him. But they never bring up the context behind the numbers. For one, Kobe in his last three seasons, was battling through many injuries. So as a result he shot very poorly in these three seasons for a combined percentage of 36.6%. If we were to remove those three seasons, and count only his rookie season (1996), until 2013, Kobe shot 45.5% from the field which is actually pretty good especially when you take into account that he was a volume scorer.

There’s more. It’s easy to just look at someone’s percentages and make judgements based on that. Kobe played 20 seasons in the NBA. Here are some facts to consider about Kobe in regards to his efficiency:

• in 9 seasons, Kobe’s FG% was higher than League Average

• Kobe was never close to being below league league average FT% in any season

• in 14 seasons, Kobe’s 2PT% was above league average

• in 11 seasons, Kobe’s EFG was higher than league average

• in 17 seasons Kobe’s TS% was higher than league average

Are you still not convinced that Kobe was efficient? Consider this. LeBron is regarded as a very efficient scorer. And this is true. LeBron is efficient. But let’s see how some of his shooting splits compare to Kobe:https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1AXB5YOhZQekQh-nS0vaOp8IN-PcGeyzM

So long story short..... Kobe shot better from everywhere on the court except the rim, and behind the three point line.... yet Kobe is labeled as “inefficient”. Very strange to say the least. https://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=1_Ypn-QXshZE6D5iPNsAKO7nSPQQSUggi
What about Kobe’s signature shot? The Mid Range Fadeaway. Well haters of Kobe Bryant will say things like “That’s a bad and inefficient shot. Fading back and shooting off balance is not a smart way to score”. But, as always, the haters are incorrect. According to the NBA's offical site, Fadeaway jumpshot percentages have been tracked since the year 2002. Kobe from 2002 until 2016 (when he retired) attempted  1298 Fadeaway jumpshots, and he made an astonishing 57% of them (731) which is close to about 2 attempts per game.

To wrap things up, saying Kobe was inefficient is just a lazy narrative. When you take a look at Kobe during his peak (06-10) he shot 46% from the field and 35% from three; both of which are great. His signature shot, the fadeaway, was lethal and effective. He was literally more effective from every spot on the court compared to LeBron with the exception of at the rim and from behind the three point line. Kobe wasn’t the most efficient, but people speak about Kobe as if he was Lou Williams in the playoffs (Lou is awfully inefficient in the playoffs).
